What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word comprised of ayu, meaning life/lifespan, and veda, meaning knowledge. Together, they comprise "the Science of Life," or Ayurveda, which is not only the oldest medical system in the world, but which continues to be recognized today as an effective form of holistic medicine by the World Health Organization. With its origins in ancient Indian traditions and texts, the goal of Ayurveda is to achieve a balanced mind-body-spirit, which is considered the ultimate state of health.

Key concepts in Ayurveda include the uniqueness of the individual, the body's capacity to self-heal, the centrality of healthy digestion and nutrition, knowledge of the three doshas or body types (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha), and lifestyle habits that support one's innate or basic constitution.

Additional Ayurvedic tenets include correcting system imbalances by inviting in 'the opposite,' the importance of a daily exercise regimen (i.e. Yoga), utilizing the healing powers of herbs and spices, and benefiting from practices such as meditation, mantras, certain types of massages, colors, and gems. Health and wellness are also said to be influenced by environmental factors, the four seasons, and even by the rhythms of the 24-hour day.

According to Ayurveda, each person has an exclusive makeup comprised of a one-of-a-kind combination of the three doshas. As a result, no two people are alike and all Ayurveda wellness prescriptions are highly personalized and individualized. To get started on your Ayurvedic path towards optimal health, begin by taking the Dosha Quiz (also known as the Body Type Test).

Frequently Asked Questions

Have a question? Here are some of the most frequently asked questions and answers.

What are doshas?

In Ayurvedic theory, everything in the world is comprised of a combination of nature's five elements: air, water, fire, earth, and space. In the human body, these same elements manifest as three energetic life forces called doshas. The three doshas, also known as Ayurvedic body types, are: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. In most people, one dosha is usually dominant or the most influential.

How does my dosha affect me?

While not apparent to the eye, your innate body type (dosha or basic constitution) affects your daily life in multiple ways. Not only does it influence your physical traits, personality characteristics, and other natural tendencies, but the doshas are constantly reacting to the foods you eat, your behaviors and lifestyle habits, your emotions, and inputs such as the weather and time of day. When one or more of your doshas is imbalanced (i.e. becomes in excess or deficit as a result of stress, poor diet, or emotional trauma), your natural internal equilibrium is thrown off, potentially manifesting in health challenges and illness.

What are the benefits of an Ayurvedic diet?

When it comes to optimal healthy living, Aryurveda places diet and nutrition at the top of the list. The key is learning which foods, ingredients, herbs and spices best match your dosha and how you can use diet to prevent and correct system imbalances. Unlike other diet plans, an Ayurvedic specialist will recommend a food plan that is tailor-made to suit your personal, biological constitution and which aims to enhance and support your overall well-being: mind, body, and spirit. This takes the guesswork out of healthy eating and puts you squarely in the driver's seat to achieve greater joy, vitality, and your personal best.

If Ayurveda is an ancient science, is it still relevant today?

Rooted in ancient Indian traditions and Sanskrit texts and considered to be the world's oldest healing science, Ayurveda remains highly relevant today. Translated as "The Science of Life," Ayurveda is experiencing a modern-day resurgence. It is considered a form of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in the U.S. and is recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an effective and sophisticated system of natural health care.

Ayurveda's holistic approach to living is highly individualized and aims to maintain balance in the mind, body, and spirit. Its protocols are easy to implement and follow and its recommendations for dosha-friendly diets, exercise routines, and lifestyle habits offer its followers practical tools for achieving greater physical, mental, and emotional health and for experiences more joy and vitality.
